History

Walking through the ages

Arcadia has a very long and interesting history and within an hours drive of our home we can examine all the eras. From ancient temples, through Roman villas and aqueducts, to Byzantine monasteries and through to more modern social history of this rural idyll.

Above is one of the aqueducts built to bring water to Heroditus Atticus’ villa.
Below is one of our local windmills built around 1890

The ancient walls of the Kastro on the hill behind your hotel. These are dated to 600-300BC

One of the merchants houses of Leonidio built around 1820. Leonidio is full of this architecture under its redrock cliffs

Welcome to the history we can explore together.

On our walks we are treading in the footsteps of history from every era.
Pausanias, the first travel writer from 200AD describes the mountain path he took on his way to visit Heroditus Atticus’ villa. We walk the very same path to be greeted by the view little changed even today

Below is the protected village of Kastanitsa with its slate roofs and the tower of Katsabeli. We walk the streets and up to the tower for the views and to learn the history of how this village withstood the attack from Ali Pasha in 1826

All our walks are steeped in history with a story from every era. Abandoned temples, monasteries and villages living in silence and the only sound our footfall.
